On Yee Captures Second Australian Title
Ng On Yee has defeated Amee Kamani 4-1 in the final of the Australian Women’s Snooker Open to win the event for the second time in her career.
The title represents an 18th ranking event title on the World Women’s Snooker Tour for the Hong Kong star and her first in 18 months since the Winchester Women’s Open in April 2022.
The victory will see her rise one position to number two in the latest world rankings following the tournament and continues a strong first half of the season for the 32-year-old.
Up against first-time finalist Amee Kamani after the pair each progressed through the knockout draw on day three of the competition, three-time world champion Ng made a fast start to take the opening two frames in just over 35 minutes.
India’s Kamani, who impressively took out the top seed Mink Nutcharut in the semi-finals, responded by taking the third frame – the first that Ng had dropped in the event – but it would be the fourth that would prove crucial as Ng cleared from behind with 47 to steal a 3-1 lead.
From there the three-time world champion would not be denied as she added a close fifth frame to get over the line and become the first player to win the Australian Open on more than one occasion since the event became a recognised Tour competition in 2018.
Ng also compiled the highest break of the competition with a run of 112 during her quarter-final victory against Lilly Meldrum to complete a dream return to Sydney this week.
For runner-up Kamani, the event also marks an important milestone, with her first appearance in a world ranking final enough to see her rise 33 places in the rankings to a career-best position of 25, from just three events played in the current two-year cycle.
