Ng to Face Kamani in Sydney Showdown
The final of the 2023 Australian Women’s Open will be contested between Ng On Yee and Amee Kamani after each successfully navigated their half of the knockout draw at Mounties earlier today.
Three-time world champion Ng maintained her 100% record of reaching the final when competing at the Australian Open following whitewash victories against Lilly Meldrum and Jessica Woods.
The Hong Kong ace hit breaks of 60, 46, 39 and most notably a tournament high run of 112 – her eighth century break on the Tour – to complete a 3-0 victory against 15-year-old Meldrum in the quarter-finals, before taking down last year’s runner-up Jessica Woods 4-0 to reach the title match.
Ng will be hoping to claim her first ranking title since April 2022 and her second in Sydney, having triumphed at the inaugural edition of the event in 2018.
Awaiting her will be India’s Amee Kamani, who defeated Australia’s Christine Firth 3-0 before overcoming world number one Mink Nutcharut with a sensation 4-0 success in the semi-finals. Thailand’s Nutcharut looked set to take the opener, only for Kamani to clear with 50 to steal an early lead from which she never looked back as further runs of 73 and 46 took her through.
For Kamani, the run represents a first world ranking event final of her career on the World Women’s Snooker Tour and will see her climb up into the top 30 for the first time when the rankings are revised after the event. The 31-year-old will also be bidding to create history and become the first player from India to claim a ranking title during the 42-year history of the Tour.
The final will be played from 12:00pm AEDT at Mounties, Sydney.
