World Rankings – Eden Masters 2021 Update

The official world women’s rankings have been updated for the second time this season following victory for Ng On Yee at the Eden Women’s Masters last weekend.

The WWS world rankings operate on a rolling two-year basis (excluding the 2020/21 season which did not take place), with points earned during 2018/19 to be removed during the course of this season. At this revision points earned at the 2018 European Women’s Masters and 2018 Australian Women’s Open were held and 2018 Eden Masters were replaced by those earned at this year’s corresponding event, subject to the ranking adjustments introduced due to the impact of the pandemic.

Six new players joined the ranking list in Coulsdon, taking the total number of current ranked players to 166.

Ng Cuts the Lead

Hong Kong’s Ng On Yee has closed the gap to 16,562 points following her comeback win against top ranked Reanne Evans in last weekend’s final.

Evans’ total in fact remains unchanged on 89,000, with the points from her 2018 success in the same competition frozen in line with the ranking adjustments currently in place due to the global pandemic. But with Ng having not competed in that even three years ago, she adds a maximum 7,500 points to her own tally, to edge back towards her biggest rival.

The Chasing Pack

Behind the top two, there are few changes in position inside the top 20, with the majority retaining their points earned at the 2018 Eden Masters.

As well as Ng, the other notable exception within the top 10 was fifth ranked Maria Catalano, who by reaching the semi-finals in Coulsdon progressed two rounds further than three years ago, to improve her points total.

Further back, Jenny Poulter gains five places to rise to 22nd following her last 16 run, while Northern Ireland’s Chucky Preston continues her ascent to climb six to a career-high position of number 25 after reaching her third quarter-final from the past four tournaments.

Also on the rise are a number of other players who have consistently reached the knockout rounds of tournaments since joining the Tour relatively recently, including Harriet Haynes (32), Kate Le Gallez (37), Jamie Hunter (47), Chrissy Allwood (48) and Mary Talbot-Deegan (49).

There is also a notable jump for Japan’s Miina Tani to 44th position following her first UK competition, while Poland’s Ewelina Pislewska halves her ranking from 118th to 59th, following her second ranking event appearance.

Finally, there is a welcome return for former world under-21 champion Jasmine Bolsover, who is straight in at 78th position following a last 16 run on her comeback following a near five-year absence.

Under-21 / Seniors

Both the Under-21 and Seniors lists remain relatively unchanged, with Steph Daughtery continuing to lead Shannon Metcalf in the junior rankings, while Jenny Poulter extends her lead over second placed Jan Hughes on the over-40s standings.

The biggest mover is Mary Talbot-Deegan, who rockets 14 places from 19th to fifth following her first-ever Seniors victory, while the list grows to a record 26 players following debuts by Ewelina Pislewska, Izabela Łącka and Cheryl Calverley last weekend.
